How We Treat Cancer?

The Sultan Qaboos Comprehensive Cancer Care and Research Center provides its treatment services through surgical, chemotherapy, radiotherapy and rehabilitation.

Medical Oncology

Medical oncology specializes in chemotherapy that is used to destroy cancer cells. The center includes 44 beds / chairs for chemotherapy in the day care unit, in addition to 4 chairs for dialysis. The patient in this unit can take treatment and return to his/her home on the same day without the need to stay overnight.

Surgical Oncology

Surgical oncology is concerned with performing the necessary surgeries for cancer patients, and surgery is one of the ways that has the ability to treat solid cancers when diagnosed at an early stage.

 

Types of surgeries offered:

  • Minimally invasive cancer surgery, (laparoscopic)
  • Sentinel node biopsy (breast cancer & gynaecological cancers)
  • Reconstructive surgery (e.g. breast oncoplastics)

 

Radiation Oncology

The services include external EBT, SRS, Cyber Knife, Cryotherapy and Palliative radiotherapy. Radiotherapy uses high-energy rays to destroy cancer cells. This treatment is used to cure cancer or to relieve symptoms.

 

SQCCCRC Radiation Oncology Department is equipped with the best machines and technology available in the field of radiation that contribute to the treatment of all types of cancer without affecting the normal organs around the effected tissues.

 

The department provides the following services:

  • Radiotherapy dedicated Computed Tomography Simulation, MRI Simulation

  • Varian Brachytherapy – Bravos®

Holistic Care

Rehabilitation therapy is concerned with providing what helps patients to restore their mental, physical and functional health in order to reintegrate them into the family, community and professional life, and it includes the following aspects:

  • Holistic Care and Social Work: Provides specialized psycho-oncology care to help patients and loved ones to deal with emotional stress throughout their cancer journey, and develops a treatment plan tailored to the patient's needs to help them navigate this critical stage of their life.
  • Physical and Occupational Therapy: Physiotherapy in oncology aims to reduce the effects of disease and side effects of treatment by assessing the patient's level of physical function and treatment to promote maximum comfort and relief of painful symptoms prior to (chemotherapy, radiotherapy and surgery). Occupational therapy includes sensory and mobile rehabilitation of the upper extremities, adjusting with the environment, cognitive therapy, recreational activity therapy, improvement of social skills and daily activities, sleep and fatigue management, and provision of assistive devices.
  • Palliative Care: Palliative care helps to reduce the suffering of cancer patients and those recovering from it. It is not limited to patients with incurable cancer. Its goal is to provide the best possible quality of life in all stages of treatment by providing counseling and psychological, emotional and moral support.
