SQCCCRC Launches a New Service to Diagnose High Risk Cases of Breast Cancer

The Department of Radiology and Nuclear Medicine at SQCCCRC inaugurated an advanced technique called “MRI Guided Breast Biopsy” the first in the Sultanate of Oman.

MRI guided biopsy is an invaluable technique for extracting tissue samples from breast lesions that are identified through MRI but may not be visible on other imaging methods. This procedure provides a high level of accuracy in diagnosis, risk assessment, and personalized treatment planning for patients.

The group of patients that mostly will benefit from this service is high risk patients for developing breast cancer (strong family history, genetic predisposition, etc.…) who are undergoing regular MRI breast screening. This screening tool detects pathological changes before even seen by mammogram and breast ultrasound.

The incidence of breast cancer continues to top the list among all cancers affecting people in the Sultanate of Oman, with 31% diagnosed in the third and fourth stages according to Ministry of Health report of 2019. The presence of such advanced technology will give an opportunity for early detection and improve survival rates.
