Dr. George M. Varghese is a Senior Consultant in Infectious Diseases at SQCCCRC. He underwent his undergraduate and postgraduate medical training at the Christian Medical College, Vellore, India where he has been a permanent faculty member for more than 20 years and worked as a professor for over 12 years. His journey to become a renowned clinician, teacher, and researcher spans over three decades with extensive training in Infectious Diseases and Tropical Medicine in many centres of excellence such as the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and Wayne State University, USA.
Dr. Varghese has been an expert in the field of infectious diseases and global health and currently serves on several national and international committees, including the Trustee of the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine & Hygiene, UK expert committee of the Indian Council of Medical Research and Governing Council of the Clinical Infectious Diseases Society. He has been honoured with several recognitions such as the Guerrant International Award by the Infectious Disease Society of America, the MG Alexander Award in Tropical Medicine by the Clinical Infectious Diseases Society, and Linnaeus-Palme Visiting Professor by the Swedish Government for the pioneering work in rickettsial infections. Apart from these recognitions, Dr. Varghese has also been conferred with Fellow of Infectious Diseases Society of America and Fellow of Royal College of Physicians.
Dr. Varghese has contributed immensely to several areas of research in his chosen specialty of Infectious Diseases and Global Health. His research interests include tropical infections such as rickettsial infections, tuberculosis, rabies, melioidosis, emerging infections and antimicrobial resistance. Dr. Varghese has published over 110 papers in national and international journals and has made immense contributions to establish the specialty of Infectious Diseases in India and is widely regarded as a pioneer in the field of Infectious Diseases in the country and abroad.
