SQCCCRC Hosted 2nd Scientific Meeting of Genitourinary Malignancies (GUM)

The Sultan Qaboos Comprehensive Cancer Care and Research Center hosted the 2nd Scientific meeting of Omani Urology Society (OUS), titled “Genitourinary Malignancy Meeting, GUM”, The event focused on discussing the latest advancements in diagnosing and managing prostate, bladder, testicular, and kidney cancers.

Dr. Hilal Al-Rashdi noted, “The scientific event served as a valuable platform for physicians and healthcare experts to exchange insights and expertise regarding the latest innovations in the field. It also shed light on advancements in therapeutic and diagnostic methods, along with patient management protocols, all aimed at enhancing the quality of clinical care for individuals with genitourinary cancers.”

The Scientific Day was attended by: Surgeons, Oncologists, Radiotherapists, Medical professionals, and specialty trainees from different hospitals in the Sultanate and deliberated on the latest research and innovative treatments for patients with Genitourinary Malignancy.

During the event, Dr. Mohamed Marzouk, Senior Consultant Urological Surgeon, presented scientific papers on the latest advancements in the treatment of bladder cancer and the management of localized cancers. Dr. Jamsari Khaled, Senior Consultant, Radiation Oncologist, addressed the management and diagnosis of prostate cancer.

Dr. Khurram Saddiqui, Consultant Urological Surgeon at Sultan Qaboos University Hospital, provided a brief into the latest therapeutic techniques for kidney cancer. Dr. Suleiman Al-Sadi, Consultant Urological Oncologist, delivered a presentation on the latest medical advancements in the treatment of testicular cancer.

In conclusion, participants highlighted the importance of deliberating cancer cases through a multidisciplinary team, including surgical, oncology, radiation oncology, radiology, and pathology specialists, along with psychologists, nutrition, and rehabilitation specialists. This integrated approach aims to develop a comprehensive treatment plan that meets the diverse needs for each individual patient.

It is noteworthy that the second period of the annual meeting was held outside the Center, in which Dr. Munjid Al-Harthy, Consultant Urologist Oncologist, presented, a scientific paper on the importance of introducing adjuvant therapies in the treatment program for renal cell cancer patients, given their role in improving treatment outcomes and reducing the risk of recurrence. Dr. Hilal Al Rashdi, Consultant Urologist at the Center, also talked on the management of localized cancers.
