The SQCCCRC research laboratory is an important element of cancer care and management at the Centre. The laboratory was established to attain the highest standards and techniques employed in international cancer research laboratories, and will play a vital role in achieving high quality research in cancer management within the Sultanate and beyond.
In order to let researchers, conduct research and apply their findings in new preventive, diagnostic and therapeutic approaches for patients benefits, we provide our research laboratory with an optimal infrastructure and an effective and stimulating working environment. We also aim to play a key role in strengthening the partnerships with research institutions inside and outside the Sultanate.
The research laboratory includes 6 units that work in an integrated manner:
Molecular Analysis Unit:
Using next generation sequencing technique and other diagnostic tests to identify the molecular bases of all cancer diseases and their genetic causes. This process is vital in ensuring accurate diagnosis, and patient management in terms of clinical response to prescribed treatment and early detection of disease recurrence or progression to facilitate early further treatment and management.
Main Equipment
Next Generation Sequencer
Affymetrix microarray
Digital PCR
Real Time PCR
Hamilton Nimbus Presto for nucleic acid extraction
Agilent 4200 TapeStation
Pyrosequencing
Proteomics Unit:
Studying the proteins profiling in cancer patients in order to find new biomarkers which will help the researchers in diagnosis and follow-up of disease development by using highly sensitive mass spectrometry approaches (LC/MS/MS).
Main Equipment
LC/MS/MS
Luminex
Flow Cytometry Unit:
Studying the chemical and physical properties of proteins inside or outside the cell and facilitates the process of sorting these cells and isolating specific groups for further analysis.
Main Equipment
BD Melody Cell Sorter
Tissue Culture Unit:
Cultivating living tissues or cells, whether they are normal or cancerous, to identify their characteristics, visualize them microscopically, and to analyze them using specialized programs.
Main Equipment
Thunder Imager 3D Cell Culture Microscope
Laser Capture Microdissection
Bioinformatics Unit:
Analyzing big data coming from molecular analysis and proteomics units by using internationally recognized databases and advanced computer applications.
Biobank Unit:
Is unique in the Sultanate for preserving and storing tissue samples, tumor cells, DNA and RNA for future use in various projects and research.
